Costruita tra il XII e XIII secolo, rappresenta un esempio di architettura romanica, da secoli ospita le reliquie dei patroni S. Basso e S. Timoteo. Nel 1456 la parte più alta della facciata è stata distrutta dal terremoto e successivamente, nel 1566 dalle invasioni da parte dei Turchi. Parti aggiuntive di stile barocco sono state eliminate tra il 1930 e il1969 durante il restauro della Cattedrale che ripristinò le originali forme romaniche.
In a central square of the “Borgo” stands the Cathedral dedicated to St. Mary of the Purification(12th-13th century), it is a noteworthy example of Romanesque architecture, the upper part of the façade was destroyed by an earthquake in 1456, and also suffered from the Turkish sack of the city in 1566. The Baroque additions were eliminated in the restoration of 1930–69, returning the edifice to its original appearance. Part of a pre-existing basilica, built in the 11th century over the original, smaller cathedral called (Ecclasia Sanctae Mater) has been found under the edifice.
The Cathedral’s crypt, below the presbytery, has for centuries preserved the relics of two patron saints, Saint Basso found in 1761, on the left side of the apse, and Saint Timoteo found on the right side of the apse in 1945.
